Ultra-Trail du Mont-BlancThe 2014 The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc kicks off at 5:30 p.m. CEDT on Friday, August 29th from Chamonix, France before circling the Mont-Blanc Massif via Italy and Switzerland. As usual, there’s an incredibly talented men’s field at this year’s race with so many story lines to play out. Can François D’Haene continue crushing major 100 milers? How will Luis Alberto Hernando fare in his 100-mile debut? Can one of the incredibly strong American men’s contingent finally match the American women’s success here? We’ll find out soon! You’d be right in thinking that we’ll be provide round-the-clock live coverage of the race. Follow all the action on our UTMB live coverage page. Favorites

As Xavier Thevenard showed us last year, even with a field stacked of international headliners a relative unknown can win a race like UTMB. That said, there is a group of guys who have the best shot at breaking the tape on Saturday afternoon. Here they are.

Francois D'haene - Pre-2014 Ultra-Trail Mount Fuji

François D’Haene

While there are certainly folks in the field who can beat him, François D’Haene is my favorite to win this year’s UTMB. He won a ~100k weather-shortened version of the race in 2012 (post-race interview) and has only gotten stronger since then. In the past 15 months, he’s won the Mont Blanc 80k, Ice-Trail Tarentaise, Diagonale des Fous, and Ultra-Trail Mount Fuji (post-race interview). Having witnessed that win at Fuji, I can attest to it being a controlled, methodical, and dominating effort.

From a pure top-end perspective, Luis Alberto Hernando might be the most fascinating contender in the field. This past Spanish Olympian in Nordic skiing (biathlon) has been crushing the trails for a few years now. Last year, he repeatedly played second chair to Kilian Jornet’s virtuosity at distances from the marathon to 80k. This May, however, Luis Alberto played his cards (and the schedule) right in beating Kilian and company to win Transvulcania (post-race interview). Two weeks after Transvulcania, Hernando ran to an incredibly fast third place at the Zegama Marathon. This will be his first attempt at a race over 100k (and only one of those), so anything could happen… including magic.

Mike Foote - 2013 TNF UTMB

Mike Foote

Mike Foote. Surprised to see him listed as the first American here? Don’t be. When Mike Foote focuses on a race like he’s focused on UTMB, you can count on that devotion paying off. That’s especially the case with UTMB, where he finished third in 2012 (~100k course) and fifth in 2013 (2012 and 2013 post-race interviews). Earlier in the year, he took third behind François D’Haene and Ryan Sandes at UTMF. He’s been training in Europe for weeks now, honing his Euro mountain running skill base.

Anton Krupicka’s health is always a concern. That’s no different heading into this year’s UTMB. He was away from racing for the better part of a year after having to drop late in last year’s UTMB due to injury after running most of the race in a top position. Then, in late May and June, he raced three times, including a course record at the Jemez Mountain 50 Mile and a win at the TNF Lavaredo Ultra Trail (post-race interview). I know that Anton has altered his racing schedule on the fly this season to maximize his chances at UTMB.

Timothy Olson - 2013 TNF UTMB

Timothy Olson

After two years of running incredible race after incredible race in 2012 and 2013 (including a pair of wins at Western States – 2012 & 2013 interviews), Timothy Olson has proven to be human after all. He was eighth at Transvulcania in May and then determinedly finished 13th in 30-plus hours at Hardrock in July. In a way, that rough go at Hardrock could lead to fresher legs and more fire for Timmy going into UTMB. Lest we forget, he did close hard to take fourth at Mont Blanc last year.

Someone get Miguel Heras some bubble wrap. He is seemingly always on the razor’s edge between peak performance (second at UTMB ’13, two wins at TNF ECS – San Francisco) and injury (many UTMBs, Western States ’14). Unfortunately, this year seems to be one dominated by injury. I look forward to chatting with Miguel in Chamonix to see how he’s feeling and whether he thinks he can repeat (or improve upon) his second-place finish at last year’s UTMB (post-race interview). [8/26 Update: Miguel Heras, second at the 2013 UTMB, will not start the 2014 edition due to injury.]

Dakota Jones - 2014 Hardrock 100

Dakota Jones

Like Miguel, Dakota Jones is someone I’d consider moving up this list after chatting with him in Chamonix. He badly sprained his ankle at Hardrock, causing him to drop about 60 miles into the race. If he was able to bounce back quickly, he should have reasonably fresh legs for this point in the season. I just have a feeling, but it’s about time for Dakota to have another stellar race.

Iker Karrera is incredibly strong. He took second at UTMB back in 2011 and has plenty of top finishes since then. He did have a rough go before dropping at UTMF earlier this year, but he’s bounced back to win the incredibly tough 96k BUFF Epic Trail earlier this month… and that’s the only reason I don’t have him listed higher. Perhaps those 12-plus hours of racing will be good preparation for this weekend… or he could still be tired.

More Top Men

Fabien Antolinos is an incredibly fast French runner. Last year, he was sixth at the IAU Trail World Championships and won the Endurance Trail Templiers. This year he’s taken second at both Ice-Trail Tarentaise and the Annecy Maxi Race two minutes ahead of Xavier Thevenard.

Jez Bragg - UTMB 2010

Jez Bragg

The 2010 UTMB champ Jez Bragg (post-race interview) is once again back for the race. Since running New Zealand’s Te Araroa Trail in early 2013, he’s been sitting right around 10th at top races such as UTMB last year as well as the Hong Kong 100k and Western States 100 this year. He could pop back into top form at any moment.

For all his strong runs, I don’t believe Tofol Castanyer has ever run a 100-mile race. He does, however, know the area having won the 86k CCC, a UTMB sister race, in 2012. Earlier this year, he was fourth at Transvulcania.

Javier Dominguez’s third place at last year’s UTMB was a huge surprise (post-race interview). Despite the fact that he’s already won races from 100k to 100 miles in Basque country this year, another podium finish would be a huge surprise for Javi. In late June, he was 11th at the Mont Blanc 80k at the Skyrunning World Championships.

Yoshikazu Hara won last year’s Ultra-Trail Mount Fuji. He’s not matched that result in major races since, having dropped from UTMB last year and finishing 38th at Western States in June. As a reminder, he’s run a 6:33 100k on the roads.

Hal Koerner

Hal Koerner

Hal Koerner races a bunch and his results are hit or miss. He’s not yet hit the mark at UTMB. In 2011, he suffered mightily in finishing in 38-plus hours. However, in addition to his multiple wins at the Western States 100, he did win the Hardrock 100 in less than 25 hours in 2012 (post-race interview). An ankle injury that took him out early in July’s Speedgoat 50k remains a question mark until we can learn more. Carlos Sa runs a ton of iconic races… and usually finishes quite high. He was fifth at UTMB in 2011 and fourth in 2012 (100k year). This year he was fourth at the Marathon des Sables.

Jason Schlarb had a very strong 2013 with a third place at the Speedgoat 50k and capped with a win at the Run Rabbit Run 100 Mile (post-race interview). This year, he’s taken his bohemian ways to Europe. He ran to a subpar (for him) 16th place at Transvulcania in May and has jumped into various Alpine races while based in the Alps the past few months.

Aite Tamang of Nepal has routinely won or reach the podium at major Asian races up to 100k over the past few years. Last year, Aite took 13th at UTMB.

This spring Nepal’s Tirtha Tamang won the Hong Kong 100k, his only race on an international stage.

Going from 18th to 14th to 10th at UTMB the past three years gets John Tidd on this list. He’s got nowhere near as high a ceiling as many found on the next list, but that’s quite the trend for this 50 year old. He’s also finished sixth and 12th at the past two UTMFs.

  • Andrew Tuckey (Australia) — Third at TNF 100k – Australia in 2012 and 2013 before taking second this year. 36th at UTMB last year.
  • Michael Wardian (US) — Multiple USATF national championships and countless top finishes.

Previa Masculina de The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc

Luis Alberto Hernando - 2014 Transvulcania Ultramarathon

Luis Alberto Hernando

No te sorprendas.

Miguel Heras - 2013 TNF UTMB

Miguel Heras

Jason Schlarb - 2013 Run Rabbit Run 100

Jason Schlarb
