Ultramarathon and Trail Running Camps

February 9, 2009 by Bryon Powell · 5 Comments

Some adults like to send their kids off to summer camp. Other adults prefer to go to camp themselves! These folks know that while you can go hit the trails for day by yourself, it’s more fun to join an enthusiastic group of trail runners for a trail running vacation while someone else sweats the details.

Almost all adult trail running or ultramarathon camps have an educational element. In fact, it’s based on this educational focus that we’ve distinguished camps from the many trail running tours or travel packages that have sprung up around the world. Camps can focus on preparing for a specific event whether the camp is held on the race course or on similar terrain if the target race is too distant or remote. The camps can also include programs on skills, training techniques, gear, race strategies, daily and in-race nutrition, and many more topics. Trail running and ultramarathon camps also often feature guest coaches or speakers.

We’ve put together the following calendar of trail running and ultramarathon camps for adults. Please leave a comment or contact us if you know of any other such camps or have any corrections.

If you’ve ever attended an adult running camp… be it trail, ultra, or neither, please share your thoughts on the experience.

    Goat,

You forgot the Massanutten Training Academy training weekends hosted by Tom Corris and the VHTRC! Next training weekend is Feb. 28. Other dates are March 28 and April 11. See the VHTRC website, http://www.vhtrc.org for details…

I participated in the ultrarunning camp of New England held in Vermont, and it was great! However, the camp's organizer said that there wasn't enough interest and too many logistical hurdles to repeat the camp.

A high-altitude running retreat in Colorado this summer:
The coach for this retreat is Lowell Ladd, a former NCAA All-American & 2x top 10 American Boston Marathon finisher. The location is a beautiful ranch in the mountains of Southern Colorado this August.

    Here is a brief description:

Starting on Sunday afternoon and running through Saturday morning, this running camp for adults will offer group runs in the massive 36,000 acre Ranch in Weston, Colorado as well as seminars, demonstrations, and group discussions for runners of all ability levels. Couples and families are welcome, as the retreat will utilize cottage accomodations which are very family friendly.

In addition to the running related events, there will be ample time to take advantage of other recreational activities which abound at the ranch. Participants will be able to horseback ride, fish, and hike in the beautiful wilderness of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

To find out more information or reserve your spot in this exciting event, go to http://www.2LCoaching.com/retreat_service.htm or feel free to call us at 866-329-9382 with any questions you have.

    Thanks.

Jeremy Black and Kathleen Hankinson (co-sponsors of the retreat)

Ladd was certainly a great Centennial Conference competitor at Dickinson… says a Haverford runner. A great post-collegiate Marathon career, too.
