2014 The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) Women’s Preview

A preview of the women’s field at the 2014 TNF Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc.

Ultra-Trail du Mont-BlancAnother year, another stacked The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. Once again, the UTMB proves itself as, perhaps, the world’s most competitive 100-mile race. For 2014, all eyes are really on Rory Bosio in the women’s race, wondering if she can possibly repeat her 2013 performance. A passel of women will, indeed be playing chase.

The 2014 race gets started on Friday, August 29 at 5:30 p.m. CEDT (9:30 a.m. MDT in the U.S.). Stay tuned because, for the fifth year in a row, iRunFar will be covering the race live! You can follow all the action on our UTMB live coverage page.

If you want, you can read our men’s UTMB preview to see how that field looks. We’ve also got pre-race video interviews with:

Top Entrants

Rory Bosio - 2013 TNF UTMB

Rory Bosio

Rory Bosio. 22:37:26. Seventh place overall. 2013 UTMB (post-race interview). What else is there really to say? Since her victory last year, she’s taken some down time in her home in the Sierra Nevada of California, and this spring run some solid training races, including wins at The North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Mile – New York and the TNF Lavaredo Ultra Trail (post-race interview). She’s been running and vacationing her way around Europe this summer, just as she did before the 2013 race. The American absolutely killed last year’s race, and there’s no reason to think she won’t do serious damage again this year.

I’m guessing that Núria Picas, of Spain, is returning to UTMB with the hopes of finishing higher and faster than her second place to Rory Bosio last year (post-race interview), when she finished almost two hours back. The 2013 UTMB was Núria’s first 100 miler and since then she’s run and won the Ultra-Trail Mount Fuji this past April (post-race interview), getting some more 100-mile experience under her belt. In the 2014 season, Núria’s seemed frenetic with her racing, racing everything, all the time, all over the world. In doing so, she’s had some serious success–winning Transgrancanaria (post-race interview) and The North Face 100k Australia as examples–as well as some problems–dropping from the Zegama Marathon and the Mont Blanc 80k. If Núria has taken the time to rest and recuperate from her earlier challenges, and dedicate herself to UTMB, I think she could challenge Rory. I know she’s been in Chamonix for a couple weeks preparing, so I’ll take this as a good sign.

Nathalie Mauclair - 2014 Ultra-Trail Mount Fuji

Nathalie Mauclair

France’s Nathalie Mauclair is a last-minute switch from the UTMB sister race, the TDS, to the UTMB itself. The last time we saw her was just two months ago at the Western States 100, where she finished third place (post-race interview) and had what she described as a great time vacationing and racing in the U.S. Before that, we saw her race and ultimately drop from UTMF due to a plantar-fascia issue. I don’t think she’s raced since Western States two months ago, which I consider a really good thing for a mountainous 100-mile race like UTMB. She’s been doing some training in the Alps in that time, as well.

Fernanda Maciel (from Brazil, living in Spain) had a big first half of 2014. In early March, she finished third behind winner Núria Picas at Transgrancanaria (post-race interview), second behind Núria again at UTMF (post-race interview), and third at The North Face 100k-Australia behind, you guessed it, Núria as well as Joelle Vaught. After that, she finished eighth but more than 90 minutes off the lead at the Mont Blanc 80k, a definite performance drop off from her earlier-season endeavors. Hopefully, she, like Núria, has given herself adequate recovery time to return to her best form. What do I think Fernanda’s absolute potential is at UTMB? Between 24 and 25 hours, which should put her on the podium. But this would require her running her own race from the get go, and starting more conservatively than she sometimes does, an extremely difficult thing to do at this race.

Joelle Vaught - 2013 Lake Sonoma 50 Mile

Joelle Vaught

We last saw Joelle Vaught of the U.S. racing to seventh place at the Speedgoat 50k just a little over a month ago. Before that, she won the small but tough River of No Return 100k in Idaho. And before that she finished second at The North Face 100k-Australia behind Núria Picas and ahead of Fernanda Maciel. And before that, she was sixth woman at the 2013 The North Face Endurance Challenge 50-Mile Championships in San Francisco. If we’re not mistaken, her 100-mile experience is two finishes at the Western States 100 that didn’t match her potential. Personally, I think UTMB is a race Joelle could excel at, lots of climbing and descending on fairly non-technical terrain. Can she put all the other variables of a race like this together for a good day out? [August 27 Update: Joelle Vaught will miss UTMB while she lets her back heal up.]

Additional Women Who Could Challenge For The Podium

As far as I can tell, this will be Uxue Fraile’s first 100 miler. So far in 2014, she’s been sixth at Transgrancanaria behind Núria Picas, Fernanda Maciel, and Ildiko Wermescher, third at Transvulcania, and seventh at the Mont Blanc 80k behind Federica Boifava but ahead of Fernanda Maciel. Last fall at Cavalls del Vent, she was second behind Núria Picas. In seeing her race previously, she seems to have the qualities that would make her a good 100-mile runner, namely patience, the willingness to wait a bit at the beginning to ensure that she can run well later.

Laurence Klein

Laurence Klein

Laurence Klein of France is a definite wild card in this race. As the 2008 European 100k champ and a three-time winner of the Marathon des Sables, she’s a proven contender on runnable terrain. However, she’s got several factors stacked against her: I don’t think she’s finished a 100 miler before, she rarely races on the kind of mountain terrain found at UTMB, and she’s not been in top form in races of late after a long recovery from an Achilles-tendon tear last year. Case in point, while she finished second at Marathon des Sables this year, her speed was well off her winning performances there. All of that said, her training this summer as been extremely focused on UTMB. A month ago, she ran a 120-mile, 36,000-feet-of-climb training week. Will we see Laurence returned to form this weekend?

American Ashley Arnold was 10th at the Speedgoat 50k a month and a half ago. Before that, she ran well off the podium at The North Face Endurance Challenge Argentina 80k in March. And before that, she finished 11th at the 2013 TNF EC 50 Mile Championships in San Francisco. All of this is to say that the 2013 Leadville 100 champion has not raced to her potential since that win a little more than a year ago (post-race interview). Ashley has tremendous talent, but I think she races a little too hard with her mind, letting mental downturns affect her physical race a bit much. If Ashley can marry her mind and body in a peaceful, patient way on Friday night ans Saturday, riding the highs and working through the lows, there is no reason she should finish outside the top-five women.

Others with Top-10 Potential

  • Silvia Trigueros (Spain) — It’s hard to get a read on the capacity of this woman, as she almost exclusively races low-key mountain races in Spain. That is, unless you look at her 2013 UTMB result: fifth place. Though she was almost six hours behind winner Rory Bosio, it was a strong showing. The other international-caliber race she’s run since then was a 13th place at the Mont Blanc 80k. It’s possible she could run to another top-five finish.
  • Federica Boifava (Italy) — This year at key races, she’s been ninth at Transvulcania and sixth at the Mont Blanc 80k ahead of seventh place Uxue Fraile and eighth place Fernanda Maciel. Last year at Trans d’Havet, she finished fifth behind second place Núria Picas and fourth place Uxue Fraile.
  • Meghan Arbogast (U.S.) — Her third go at UTMB. She was 12th in the shortened race of 2012 and 13th on the regular course in 2013.  She was eighth at the 2014 Western States 100 in what she described as a tough race for her. She’s now an eight-time Western States finisher which means that she’s a 100-mile expert. I’d love to see Meghan put all the variables of the UTMB together and push toward the top five here.
  • Ildiko Wermescher (Hungary) — Ildiko has already raced prolifically in some tough mountain races this year. She’s a strong presence in the Euro ultra world, and her previous results indicate that finishing in the back of the top 10 in this field should be about right. She was fourth but two hours back from winner Núria Picas at Transgrancanaria, fifth behind winner Rory Bosio at the 2014 Lavaredo Ultra Trail, and second at the Eiger Ultra Trail 101k.
  • Claire Price (U.K./Hong Kong) — In the back half of the top 10 is also where I’d expect to see Claire finish on a good day. She’s had some mixed results over the recent year or so on the same terrain on which the UTMB is run, including a second place at the TDS, a sister race to the UTMB, last year, as well as 14th place at the Mont Blanc 80k in June.
  • Shona Stephenson (Australia) — Another gal with a shot at the top 10, she’s finished a respective sixth, sixth, and ninth this year at the Tarawera Ultramarathon, UTMF, and The North Face 100k-Australia.

Still Even More Women

  • Luz Perez Carbajo (Spain) — 11th 2013 Transvulcania.
  • Kelly Cronin (U.S.) — Second at the Cascade Crest 100 Mile last year. Strong in California ultras.
  • Leila Degrave (U.S.) — Ninth at the 2013 Western States 100. Strong runner in the Rocky Mountain region. First time racing something like UTMB.
  • Sophie Grant (New Zealand/U.K.) — Fourth 2013 Marathon des Sables, 11th 2014 Lavaredo Ultra Trail, fourth behind second place Lizzie Wraith at the 2014 Lakeland 50 Mile.
  • Andrea Huser (Switzerland) — Seventh 2014 Transvulcania behind third place Uxue Fraile. Fifth Eiger Ultra Trail 101k behind second place Ildiko Wermescher. It appears she ran a 130k race less than three weeks before UTMB, however?
  • Simona Morbelli (Italy) — Fourth 2013 CCC, a sister race to the UTMB. Winner 2014 EcoTrail de Paris.
  • Luciana Moretti (Argentina) – 9th at Transvulcania 2013, 5th at CCC 2013 and 6th at this year’s UTMF. Actually recovering of a fascia lata injury, but being super focused on her preparation for UTMB during the whole year. [Added August 27]
  • Magdalena Ostrowska-Dolegowska (Poland) — Seventh place 2014 Transgrancanaria behind winner Núria Picas, third place Fernanda Maciel, fourth place Ildiko Wermescher, and sixth place Uxue Fraile.
  • Rachel Paquette (Canada) — Third at the 2014 TNF EC 50 Mile-New York behind winner Rory Bosio, third place 2012 Canadian Death Race.
  • Lizzie Wraith (U.K.) — Third 2013 Lavaredo Ultra Trail, winner 2013 Lakeland 100 Mile, second place 2014 Lakeland 50 Mile.

  • Lizzy Hawker (U.K./Switzerland)
  • Bethany Lewis (U.S.)
  • Tina Lewis (U.S.)
  • Ruby Muir (New Zealand)

Previa Femenina de The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc 2014

Nuria Picas - 2014 TNF Transgrancanaria

Nuria Picas

Fernanda Maciel - 2014 TNF TransGranCanaria

Fernanda Maciel

Ashley Arnold - 2013 Leadville 100 - win

Ashley Arnold
