This Week in Running Justin Mock TWIRThe stars were out. Zach Miller and Patrick Kipngeno scored wins, and Careth Arnold and Renee Metivier hit a big payday and a course record.

Wasatch 100 Mile – Kaysville, Utah

Men

Jose Cruz is close to a sure thing at Wasatch. He’s on the podium every year. He was second in 2024, first in 2023, third in 2022, second in 2021, and he won this year’s race in 20:38. Cruz has The Bear 100 Mile in three weeks, too. Last year, after finishing second at Wasatch, Cruz doubled back to win at The Bear.

Second-place Josh Griffin was only 10 minutes back in 20:48, and Tyler Fannin was third in 21:16.

Women

Isabella Poulos won the women’s race in 23:45. It was her 100-mile debut after a mountain summer highlighted by second- and fourth-place runs at the San Juan Solstice 50 Mile and the Telluride Mountain Run.

Teresa Kaiser and Alexis Crellin were second and third in 24:44 and 24:57, respectively.

Saint Jeoire Skyrace – Saint Jeoire, France

The 30k race with 2,800 meters of climbing was the year’s 17th Skyrunner World Series contest.

Alain Santamaría (Spain) started off the lead but hauled past everyone late to win the men’s race in 3:26. Martin Nilsson (Sweden) and early leader Lucien Mermillon (France) were second and third in 3:28 and 3:32. It was Santamaría’s third win of the year.

Maria Christen (Switzerland) gapped the women’s field early, but Naiara Irigoyen (Spain) chased her down to win in 4:15. Christen was two minutes back in second at 4:17, and Patricia Pineda (Spain) was third in 4:21. It was Irigoyen’s second series win of the year.

There are still seven more Skyrunner World Series races to go too.

Imogene Pass Run – Ouray, Colorado

It was the race’s 52nd year. The point-to-point course climbed over 5,000 feet in its first 10 miles, crested 13,114-foot Imogene Pass at its high point, and then dropped down seven miles into Telluride. It’s 17.1 miles in total.

Race local Spencer Keating ran home first for the men in 2:25. Keating first ran the Imogene Pass Run back in 2017 as a 16-year-old and finished 55th in 3:06. Second-place Tim Parr’s history with the race goes back even farther. Parr was runner-up this year in 2:27, but he’s won here five times. Parr’s wins came in 2019, 2016, 2015, 2009, and way back in 2008. Third-place Evan Kwiecien finished in 2:30. Matt Carpenter’s 2:05 from 1993 is the men’s course record.

Women’s winner Renee Metevier hit an absolute home run. She was fifth overall in 2:32, and that was 22 minutes better than everyone else. She also cut three minutes from Keri Nelson’s course record that had stood since 2009.

Gabrielle Glime and Fiona Nicholson were second and third in 2:54 and 2:59, respectively.

Dolomitenmann – Lienz, Austria

The four-person relay combined mountain running, paragliding, mountain biking, and whitewater kayaking, and the winning team shared $17,500. The mountain runners went first on a 12k course with 2,000 meters of up.

The top teams loaded up with Kenyan runners. Patrick Kipngeno ran the fastest leg in 1:20:21 and was part of the first-place team. Richard Omaya Atuya split 1:21:40 as the second-fastest runner, but his team was only third. Philemon Kiriago ran 1:22:43, the race’s third-fastest run, and his team was second.

There were three all-women’s teams, and Denisa Dragomir (Romania) had the fastest run leg in 1:49, and her team finished first.

Serre Che Trail – Serre Chevalier, France

Marathon race winners Baptiste Chassagne (France) and Elisa Guiramand (France) won in 4:55 and 6:53. Full results.

Dolomiti di Brenta Trail – Molveno, Italy

Part of the XTERRA Trail Run World Series, 45k race winners Mauro Rasom (Italy) and Rea Kolbl (Slovenia) ran 4:55 and 6:15, and half marathon champs Jacopo Troiano (Italy) and Irene Saggin (Italy) did it in 1:48 and 2:06. Full results.

Ultra-Trail Harricana du Canada 125k – La Malbaie, Québec, Canada

Mathieu Blanchard (France) and Xavier St-Cyr (Canada) crossed the line together for the win in 15:12. Valérie Arsenault (Canada) was the first back and was more than two hours ahead of second-place finisher Marline Cote (Canada).

Backcountry Rise 50k – Toutle, Washington

Lightning forced the cancellation of Saturday’s 50k race, but on Sunday Linn Rising and Deanna Doane won the accompanying 20 miler in 2:59 and 3:24. Full results.

Mogollon Monster 100 Mile – Pine, Arizona

Jeremy Humphrey and Colleen Moffatt won the challenging 100 miler in 21:07 and 27:52. It was the race’s fourth- and third-fastest finishes ever. Full results.

Devil on the Divide 50k – Empire, Colorado

The race hits the Continental Divide with a 13,000-foot high point and 6,500 feet of climbing. Racing for the first time since the Hardrock 100, Zach Miller won in 4:32, and he was pushed to the finish by 19-year-old Alistair Clark. Clark was second in 4:38, and Jon Christensen was third in 4:39. Only six minutes separated the first three women. Nora Rex won in 5:30, and Jess Schueler and Mickey Davis were second and third in 5:32 and 5:36. Full results.

Black Squirrel Half Marathon – Fort Collins, Colorado

The trail half marathon inside Lory State Park had Mitch Klomp and Tayler Tuttle at the top in 1:27 and 1:39. Full results.

Cirque Series – Arapahoe Basin, Colorado

At 9.4 miles and with 2,411 feet of climbing, this was one of the longer Cirque Series races. Andy Wacker got the win in 1:05. He was 42 seconds better than Jerrell Mock. Mock, a 2:11 marathoner last year, was second in 1:06, and Noah Williams was third in 1:08. The women ran it close, too. Rena Schwartz outdueled Courtney Coppinger for the win. These two were 49 seconds apart, with Schwartz in at 1:18 and Coppinger at 1:19. Alexa Aragon was third in 1:20, almost a minute back of Coppinger. Wacker and Schwartz each pocketed $1,000 for their wins. Full results.

Superior Fall Trail Races – Two Harbors, Minnesota

The 103-mile race dates back to 1991. It’s a point-to-point on the Superior Hiking Trail. Race winners Jakob Wartman and Rachel Turi won in 20:13 and 25:36. Full results.

Horse Thief 50k – Austin, Texas

Nicholas Spivey won the 50k men’s race in 6:07, while Lauren Brackin won the women’s event in 7:00. Full results.

Youngstown Ultra Trail Classic 50k – Youngstown, Ohio

It was a pair of alliterations for the race winners this year. Chad Coalmer and Courtney Clark won the Mill Creek Park race in 4:40 and 5:05. Full results.

Finlayson Arm 50 Mile – Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

It was Hugo Henckel who came away with the win in 11:11, only 19 seconds faster than second-place Michael Stone. Hilary Spires took home the win for the women in 12:45.

Hurricane 100k – Hurricane, West Virginia

There’s money in the bank for Caleb Bowen and Careth Arnold after the Hurricane 100k. The 100k race had a $10,000 prize purse with $2,500 to its winners and a $2,000 course record bonus on top. Bowen won in 8:06, and it was a new event record. Arnold won in 9:35. She was four minutes back of the event record but set a clockwise course record, and she did it only 10 days after winning TDS in France, too. Full results.

Noble Canyon 50k – Pine Valley, California

Olivia Horgan took the overall win in the 50k with a time of 4:53. She was less than a minute ahead of Anthony Fagundes, who won the men’s race, also in 4:53. Full results when available.
