2013 Cayuga Trails 50 Mile Men’s Race

In the early miles, Denis Mikhaylov built a small lead with Sage Canaday, Jordan McDougal, and Matt Flaherty running no more than two minutes back. By mile 12, Canaday had a two-minute lead with the other three leaders close together while a chase pack of Cole Crosby, Yassine Diboun, and Sam Jurek only another minute back. Six miles later, Canaday still had two minutes on Flaherty and McDougal while Mikhaylov went off course before dropping out.

At midrace, Flaherty had closed within a minute and change of Canaday while putting three minutes on McDougal. After the turn on this two-lap course, Canaday quickly added three minutes of padding to his lead in the next six miles. He held his lead of between four and six minutes for the remainder of the race. Flaherty remained consistent while McDougal fell as far back as 13 minutes behind Canaday and 9 minutes behind Flaherty at just after mile 37… then came a surge. By the finish, McDougal was just six minutes behind Canaday and less than a minute back of Flaherty. That’s one heck of a close!

2013 Cayuga Trails 50 Mile Women’s Race

Although some races have clear favorites, there’s a reason they’re still run. Cassie Scallon went into this year’s Cayuga 50 as the overwhelming favorite. Unfortunately, while leading early Scallon took a fall, injuring her hamstring in the process. She continued on in the lead with Kristina Folcik bridging Scallon’s lead of never more than two or three minutes shortly after mile 18. Scallon would drop due to the injury at mile 25.

Folcik relentlessly built a lead on formerly third-place and now second-place runner, Sandi Nypaver. Nypaver was 18 minutes in arrears as of mile 37, which grew to 22 minutes at the finish. Amy Rusiecki held the spot behind Nypaver all day, although local runner Jess Snyder made a late charge, closing to within two minutes at mile 43, but both held their positions to the finish.
