The lottery for the 2013 The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc has taken place! (Lottery draws for its sister races the CCC and TDS also happened, and PTL entrants were previously chosen.) Together these races saw some 10,000 folks registering for the lottery. Congrats to all who were chosen! Here you can search the full entrant list, and below we’ve culled a list of top contenders:

I don’t think Timothy Olson is running UTMB this year. Right now, Western States and Run Rabbit Run are high summer(ish) 100 milers.

As of now my plan is to run UTMB in 2013! I’m really looking forward to visiting the different countries and being mesmerized by Mount Blanc as I really discover her beauty! Very blessed to be apart of TNF and allowed the opportunity to travel, see the world and run this race I’ve wanted to do for years. Now let’s pray for good weather and that we run the real course! Cheers
^ my comments above. RRR is a beautiful course as well and if my legs heal quickly I might hop on that one too. Of course I run for the pure joy of it, but a prize purse helps pay the bills.
Speedgoat had a great race this year at RRR and I would love to run that with him again one day…maybe this year maybe not, most important is taking care of the body.

I don’t know for sure, but I very much doubt that Kilian was in the lottery.

Thanks for the compilation! :D The most interesting scenario here arguably is between both of the queens; Ms. Greenwood who has had a remarkable past two seasons and Ms. Hawker, the undisputed defending champ of UTMB! It will be an exciting, nail biting women’s race. Its too close to call. On the mens side, there is definitely without a doubt a free for all without the past favorites running. But my gut tells me Mr. Chorier will come out to podium; we have seen evidence of this at Hardrock and what he did there. Carlos Sa is no one to leave out either! Mr. Chorier will have others running up front with him: Budd, Lorblanchet, and Armstrong. It will be an exciting race for sure! Thanks Meghan and Bryon, for all you do for us ULTRA fans out there!

Cash is better than a cowbell. :-) Run Rabbit Run will be a stout race, and it’s starting to look like the purse may climb to 60k, giving the winner about 15k.
If UTMB would buck up and use some of their million dollars worth of entry fees, the field would be far more stout (not that it isn’t already) just sayin…. Kudos for Run Rabbit Run for getting the purse as high as they can.
UTMB does allow for faster runners to get in later, so it may get even more competitive once the gun goes off.
I think Olson is gonna get me this time at RRR. :-) I got lucky last time.
Lucky? Nah I don’t think so. When that race had a later start giving the opportunity for stealth running as well as NOT allowing pacers… Well I knew then they were messing with the wrong goat. You have too much experience with those conditions. Give em hell again Karl…

You are right, but Timothy had the UTMB in his mind, see above. But now he is eventually not starting there, he has to defend the WS 100 record., The most battling race of the year, I guess. RRR is cool, if Timothy is in top shape, there is only one guy who can beat him, I suppose Kilian.
But Kilian is following more his summitsofmylife topic, awesome DVD, a must see for everyone, this guy, Kilian seems to come from another planet.

Killian is definately from another planet, but everyone is beatable once in a while. Including Tim. Last year at RRR, he just didnt’ have a good day, so I got lucky, same with Wolfeman. I expect others to go to Steamboat and kick my ass, but we’ll see.
For many of us, UTMB is very expensive to go to, even when sponsors pay for it, it’s a long flight, two weeks away from working..etc etc, and a cowbell and a north face pack to the winners. Tim would be far better off running RRR and winning some dinero. I just wish UTMB would throw down some real prize money, they have the resources to do it, and it could be the big dance of the year, worldwide. The course is amazing, and perfect for it. And, they allow elite runners to slide in to enhance the competition, which most races in the US as we know, dont’ care much about that. If I were Killian, I would keep making movies while he has the chance. Stuff like that is priceless. Even I can say that with my Red Bull Human Express movie. It’s important to have fun more than anything, and Killian is doing what he wants, kudos for that!

you are absolutly right, i agree totally. The new DVD from Kilian is such from another plant, so many awesome picture and stories, the one where he goes up the MtBlanc and back in 8 h, the other where he goes up with dakota, it seems to me that dakota was impressed, that will means a lot. Yes Kilian has the money better gets the money to make his dreams come true, he ist the guy who gets more than all others, but he is the best, he can to so mnay things, skiiing, climbing, running, his goal 2015 the Mt everst record in 22 h will be the end of his journey, show us, there no limits, but he is one thing with the mountain, I have so mny respect of this guy, of his abilities, also of his behaviour, respekt etc.
Tim is may be getting the second ultra super star. With the North face he now has the possibilities to show the world what he can really get out of his body. I hope and wish him all the best I hope he has some good days in 2013, may be he the Uroy 13, we will see.

It may change this year, but last year the UTMB field was much more stout than the RRR field, despite the money. Especially on the women’s side, where RRR didn’t even get enough hares finishing to pay out the prize purse. I’m not sure that a huge purse equals the best field. And who cares if a race draws the best field every year? There’s something to be said for location (Chamonix) and history (races like WS). I run races because they interest me, for whatever reason–course, location, etc. It’s very rarely about money. To be honest, I’d much rather have a top-5 UTMB cowbell than a few grand.
Keep in mind that UTMB is now 10 years old, in UTMB’s first few years, the race was hardly competitive, just look at the results. I agree that Cham is the ultimate place to run, no doubt. My gripe is the RD’s take in a million dollars in entry fees, get paid from the towns to run through the towns, so the numbers are probably alot bigger. Where does the money go? in the RD’s pocket, and it’s fine to make some good money on a race. I feel the RD’s could give 100k to a prize purse and not even blink, and still make 250,000 bucks. RRR100 made no profit, gave back to the fast runners, and charity. I’m not so sure UTMB gave anything to charity. They may have, I’m not sure. Cham is the best venue, and at least they don’t call it a “championship”. :-) Money will draw competition up front, times are changing….
Totally agree. But it’s hard to make people understand. In South America, we’re having the UTMB fever…everybody just runs for the points to get there. It’s too expensive for people down here to go, but for example, nobody knows RRR100. They prefer to have the christmas tale of “How beautiful was Chamonix” although the race might be of 60k to 160k depending on the organization.

Since Timoty is a TNF athlete, i bet he will be racing this year in the UTMB. Killian is targeting his summits project. He wouldn’t be attending.

Did Kilian miss out in the lottery or did he just not enter? I’d be surprised if he needed to enter via lottery being a multi-time winner.
I just don’t think he intends to run the race this year.
In Europe elite runners bypass lotteries. But Killian is not running UTMB this year.

Fabrice Hardel from San Diego could be added to the list of top dogs. He ran well at UTMB a couple years ago and has been setting CR’s recently.
Chris, 2011 UTMB was a crazy place to be. I am really hoping on better weather :-) this year. Going back is just wild!

Julien Chorier should have this race on lockdown for the men, as will Lizzy Hawker for the women….but it’s a long race and you never know! I’m super pumped about it…first entry attempt was a success! Cannot wait! I’ll be coming off of finishing my 3rd of the 4 Deserts races just before and hope I have time to recoup!
Two years ago salomon was going for a Spanish sweep but 2013 look like it is going a French one with Julien Thomas and Francois.
They live there and train together al year long together, last year julien run the UTMB a month before with some friends as a training run just for fun.

Thomas Lorblanchet isn’t Salomon Runner anymore, now he’s running for ASICS. And Julien went out last year when the course was shortened. Not many top Salomons for 2013…
It would be very interesting to hear from Kilian himself whether he intends to run the UTMB again. It seems a great shame that he might not do so (if that’s his thinking). He’s still so young, and who knows what he might be able to achieve in terms of faster times on the course. He could raise the bar to a whole new level?
Bryon, any chance irunfar might be able to get an interview with him and discuss his future plans for the major ultra races? And do you think he’ll try Western States again?
I’ve read that Anton K has the UTMB down for 2013 what’s happening on that front?

Giuliano is 9 in Transvulcania 2012 and win Gran Trail Valdigne K100 for two times (2010 and 2012).

We’ve listed runners here as they appear on the UTMB list. Fernanda registered herself under Spain (though her nationality is Brazilian).
Seb Chaigneau is 3rd or 4th on the HR100 waiting list.
If he gets in, then he will probably do the CCC.
If not, he’ll be on the start line at UTMB
And as already said, elites get invites so they can make the decision later in the season.
Would love to see Dakota toe the line @Chamonix.
This post could have got old now…. But what about Anton that just sign up. UTMB is getting better than ever rematch with Thomas. Julien now has some good competition, with good weather course record is going down.
