2012 The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) Live Coverage

August 30, 2012 by Bryon Powell · 7 Comments

Ultra-Trail du Mont-BlancOnce again this year, The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc brings together the most internationally deep field of any 100-miler in the world. Stars from the US, Canada, Japan, China, Australia, and nearly every European country have assembled in Chamonix, France at the based of Mont Blanc to fully circle the massif.

Here at iRunFar we’ll be bringing you round the clock coverage of UTMB starting at 6:30 pm CEDT on Friday, August 31. (That’s 10:30 am Friday MDT back in the States.) As usual, we’ll be livecasting the event on iRunFar’s Twitter feed. We’ll also be combining our twitter feed with other possible news sources and encouraging all of you to join the discussion in the CoverItLive window below.

Update: Due to wintry weather, the UTMB course will be heavily altered. It will pass through France only as the Grand Col Ferret between France and Switzerland is now impractical for the more than 2,000+ racers. The revised course will be at least 100k, passing through Val Montjoie and Valle de Chamonix. The race starts at 7 pm local time Friday. We will provide UTMB course change and start time change information throughout the day.

[Ps. To get all the latest ultra news from iRunFar.com, subscribe via RSS or email.]

Here are a couple resources to help you follow the race:

  • The UTMB website, including at the technical information about the race (there are tabs for the course, profile, etc. – check our update page for current UTMB course map and elevation profile) and the entrants list;
  • iRunFar’s men’s and women’s elite previews;
  • iRunFar’s pre-race video interviews with Julien Chorier (Updated!), Rory Bosio, Mike Foote, Luke Nelson, and Gary Robbins;
  • UTMB runner tracking; and
  • The full UTMB UltraTrail.TV website, with live broadcasts, webcams, and more.

    Is the weather going to allow the race to be run? Or is it gonna snow to much?

      The race mandated a fourth apparel layer to be carried. The foul weather is not a surprise. I cannot but expect the race to carry on.

    I feel really sorry for those who have travelled for the UTMB and are now running a bad-weather course, with a whiff of out and back about it. After last year’s problems, I am beginning to think we had it lucky in 2007, and it was brilliant running through Italy and Switzerland.
