Kilian Jornet 2011 UTMBKilian Jornet is one heck of an ultrarunner. He’s already won The North Face Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc twice and, as of June, won the Western States 100. This summer, he’s gone back to the European mountain racing scene. It’s scary to think that Kilian considers himself much more of a sub-ultra mountain runner than an ultrarunner. However, he’s been challenged and beaten at these shorter distances this summer. Rather than a detriment, such racing has only made him stronger and faster. Having talked with many of the elite men the past few days, there’s a near consensus that Kilian is the man to beat.

In the following interview we discuss what Kilian’s been up to since Western States, his gear, and the energy he derives from the crowd rather than nature during UTMB.
