Relentless Forward Progress Launch Week

April 25, 2011 by Bryon Powell · 36 Comments

Relentless Forward ProgressDear iRunFar readers,
This is one of the most exciting weeks of my life and I aim to make it just as thrilling for you!

On my end, I couldn’t be more psyched that Relentless Forward Progress: A Guide to Running Ultramarathons officially launches on Friday.* You see, we’re all members of the same running community. While some of us who’ve discovered ultramarathons were fortunate to have learned from others around us, there’s yet to be a comprehensive guide to training and racing ultramarathons to fill our community’s need. That’s why I’ve spent the past year and a half working on Relentless Forward Progress (reviews). More than a dozen top ultrarunners and experts also recognized our community’s need and graciously contributed to make this book as helpful to you and your friends as possible.

By reducing ultrarunning’s steep learning curve, Relentless Forward Progress aims to have you or your friends spending more time enjoying running and its camaraderie and less time suffering unnecessarily. If you want to inspire others in our community of runners who might be looking for a new running challenge or to ease the path of those who have already started their ultramarathon journey, please get the word out about this book. For instance, you could write about the book on Facebook or Twitter, post something on your blog, or simply write an email to a friend whom you think would enjoy it. (Here are some other ideas for helping out!)

*If you’re interested, autographed copies from iRunFar are already available as are unsigned copies from many online retailers, such as Amazon.com, which also has a Kindle version.

Launch Week Contests!
I’m celebrating you and all the other members of our running community by holding six seven huge contests here on iRunFar throughout launch week. Every day this week, I’ll open a new week-long contest featuring a pair of running shoes, running apparel, and an iRunFar Headsweats hat. A few of the giveaways will feature additional prizes, so be sure to take a look everyday. Here’s the killer contest lineup!

[NOTE: You must enter contests on their respective pages, NOT on this page!]

  • Monday – Montrail and Mountain Hardwear (closed)
  • Tuesday – La Sportiva, Black Diamond, SmartWool, and many more (closed)
  • Wednesday – Salomon and Julbo (closed)
  • Thursday – Pearl iZUMi and many more (closed)
  • Friday – The North Face (closed)
  • Friday BONUS – GORE-TEX TransRockies Run entry! (closed)
  • Saturday – Book launch event in Park City, Utah with prizes (we’re not counting this one!)
  • Monday BONUS – Mizuno and more

Happy trails,
Bryon

Congratulations Bryon! iRunFar was the site that introduced me to ultrarunning and planted the idea in my head that it might be possible for me to run 31, 50, or 100 miles. I’m training for my first 50k and have made an enormous amount of mistakes, particularly training mistakes, and have battled through a number of injuries in my short time trail running. Maybe if I’d had a guidebook I could have avoided some of my downtime and my DNS at the HAT Run 50k. Thanks Dude!

    Congratulations! Very exciting.

If you want to sell a copy of the kindle version directly I’d be willing to buy it from you so you can keep the full value…otherwise I’ll pick up a version directly from Amazon.

Thanks, Blaine, but I’ve got no means of selling the Kindle version directly. As it so happens, I make out significantly better on Kindle rather than paperback purchases made on Amazon. :-)

I’m really excited for you, Bryon. I can only imagine how much work went into creating this book. It’ll surely be one of the go-to resources for budding ultra runners, like myself. I’ll look forward to reading it!

Got the book and diving in headfirst with my first ultra at Leadville this year! I plan to use every resource…thanks for writing it. I am paying special attention to the altitude section (training in Indianapolis) which I expect will prepare me well. Or at least well enough. Thanks again!

    Congrats Bryon,

Irunfar was one of the first places I came to when starting to train and complete ultras back in the fall of 07. I still remember reading the picking and training for your first ultra posts. Great stuff! Thanks for all the content. I can’t wait to read the book and incorporate some of its content into my training.

    Keep Up the Good Work

Great resource! Read it this weekend and found lots of useful information and insight that will help me move forward this year and hopefully with greater success. Man I wish I had seen the Kindle version. I’ve had mine on back order for so long that it shipped and didn’t even realize.

    Bryon,

Congratulations and thank you for putting this together. I already got my Kindle version and much look forward to both reading it, and referencing back to it as I continue to improve my running. Having had the privilege of a couple of months of coaching from you and the ensuing very positive results, I have high expectations for the book, however, I would not be surprised if you over-deliver.

Who better to compile a book of this type other than Bryon? Few people are out as much as him living the dream; going to a host of different events and talking to all the people in our sport. I am really looking forward to adding this book to my collection.

Btw, whenever I see the book title I think of Kaizen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaizen

Well, I knew this was the how-to book I desperately needed when I saw the section title “defecating in the woods.” Much appreciated, ahem. The unexpected bonus, however, is the poetry. Right at the beginning your book captures the mystique of running trail ultras. I love the metaphorical connection of campfires that comfort us when we’re alone in the woods and the similarly comforting (and fragile) “fire” that keeps us humming forward at 50, 60, 70 miles on dark and gnarly trails.

Now on to the rest of the book…

    Bryon,

I am Meghan’s Aunt from Ohio. I just wanted to congratulate you on your book. This is an awesome accomplishment. I plan on buying a copy to help support your wonderful effort. Since I’m not a runner I thought I would be interested in knowing what it takes to accomplish the love of running that both Meghan and you share. Good luck with the sales…….
