Geoff Roes Pre-2010 UTMB Interview

August 26, 2010 by Bryon Powell · 13 Comments

We caught up with Geoff Roes, the Western States 100 record holder, the day before the 2010 Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc. During the interview, Roes talks about his training since Western States, breaking his own record at the Crow Pass race in Alaska, the talent of Kilian Jornet, other UTMB competitors, his plan to have no plan on race day, and his hope for rain during this year’s UTMB.

We apologize in advance for the background noise during the interview. The location is one of the quietest in the vicinity and worked well for other interviews. However, noisy tourists sat down just after we started filming. In the end, we are publishing this interview based on the fact we think something is better than nothing.

The background noise is a bit overwhelming at times, but I enjoyed it overall.

I hope Scott can take this one though.

It was, David, but I’m glad you enjoyed it in the end. If you’re a fan of Scott’s check back tomorrow … I interviewed him tonight. That one will have to wait until tomorrow.

Byron love your interviews. You are the only one covering the ultra world. If I may, I know you are not a video dude and are working as a one man band, you could purchase two lavalier mics (<$200) and turn your cameras auto gain control off (audio menu), to manually set your sound levels, you would have much better audio. Audio is MORE important than the visuals.

Keep shooting. Looking forward to your UTMB coverage!

Thanks for the feedback, Geoffrey. Lavalier mics are definitely in the works… I just want to save up enough that I can buy a set that I’ll want to use for years to come. As for gain control, I’ve got no clue what it is, but I’ll check it out.

      Thanks again,
      Bryon

    Byron:
Congratulations on showing restraint and not going off on those tourists! I enjoyed the interview and am always into hearing anything Geoff has to say. I hope it’s a great race; and envy you for being there to observe it. Have fun!

Thanks for the interviews Bryon! At one point in the interview you looked over at those tourists with an “I’m about to open a can of whoop-ass” look on your face. Awesome! Thanks for all of this…you’re the only one we can rely on for this kind of coverage.

Rex, if I had “fricking laser beams on my head,” those tourists would surely be dead. ;-)

Liked the interview, thanks for that Bryon! It’s great to have someone out there following the UTBM as close as you do and giving us these great info!
