Great Blog and kudos to the RDs you profile! The problem is many RDs don't have the bandwidth or the interest (yet) to incorporate green practices into their events. It's really important that athletes make their preferences known to their RDs. My company -- Athletes for a Fit Planet -- works with RDs to help them map out long-term plans for going green and then implement specific changes - recycling/composting, reducing/offsetting emissions, leave no trace, and perhaps most important, involving their sponsors and vendors into their green initiatives. Most RDs we talk to want to do the right thing - they just need a little guidance to get moving in the right direction. Check us out at www.afitplanet.com

Derrick and I RD a fall 8K, and we posted this on our website:
(www.healthandadventure.com/56001.html):

"This year, we are increasing our efforts to make the run environmentally friendly. We welcome Bullfrog Power onboard as a sponsor – Bullfrog will provide 100% green electricity to the race. Other earth friendly race features: an online registration option, recycling and composting facilities onsite, organic coffee provided by Hillside Coffee Company of Sydenham, organic and local food options, and literature provided by Earth Day Canada and Foodland Ontario. In future years we will look at a shuttle bus from Kingston, and continue to improve the race by striving to make it a “no-waste” event. If you have any suggestions or comments, drop us a line!"

Thanks for the additional ideas, resources and inspiration to help us improve.

I work with the boulder marathon (formerly backroads) and we recently partnered with Leave No Trace to help manage and reduce our impact even further

Already we work with great companies such as Clif along with local groups including Eco-Cycle

I'm hoping to incorporate even greater measures before the race, but would rather overdeliver than overpromise.
.

this is really great food for thought. i love the fact that you are bringing awareness to this issue! my son and i are actively seeking ways to be more green in our daily lives. this is in line with a lot of what i've been contemplating lately. one way i'm going green to zane grey is carpooling the four-hour drive with fellow tucsonans.
