Today’s New York Times includes an article discussing sports drinks aimed at women. The article also reviews four female-oriented sports drinks, including:

  • Nuun U
  • Luna Sport Electrolyte Splash (Clif product)
  • Crystal Light on the Go Hydration
  • Propel Fit Water with Calcium (Gatorade product)

It’s my understanding that these products aren’t tailored to the nutritional needs of women specifically, but more to their palates. Therefore, there should be nothing stopping men from trying these products. I, for one, like to have as many options as possible in my flavor arsenal. If some of these drinks have lighter flavors, as advertised, I might be incorporating some into my hydration plans in the near future.

I’d definitely like to try the Luna Sport Electrolyte Splash Lime-Ade and Pink Grapefruit flavors, as they still have calories and the flavors are ones I tend to like. Who cares if Luna is a women’s brand? Not I. I really like some flavors of Luna Bar (chai tea and dulce de leche) and the Luna Sport Moons (think Clif Bloks the size of gummy bears) in pomegranate, blueberry, and watermelon.

Also on the to try list is the new Nuun U. I like all of the existing nuun flavors with Kona Kola being particularly tasty (and caffeinated!). I believe the the u line will include tangerine ginger, goji berry green tea, and lemon chill flavors at launch. (Please correct me if I’m wrong.) I’d love to try all these flavors. The lemon chill and the goji berry flavors sounds quite tasty. If the tangerine ginger flavor contains actual ginger, it would be worth trying when your stomach goes south during a race. If you want to know more about nuun u, you can sign up for updates from nuun. Matt Hart’s blog is also a great source for information regarding nuun’s products. Matt has already posted an interview with the founder of nuun about the new u product.

Anyone here used any of these products? What do you think in terms of flavor? How about hydration performance/nutrition?
