Awesomeness

October 12, 2007 by Bryon Powell · 3 Comments

Awesomeness has nothing to do with my running at the moment and everything to do with the great responses to my post about multiday running packs. Thanks for the info Sparky, Jeff, and Aaron. Everyone else, keep the info, whether on packs or more broadly about fastpacking, coming. Please!

I’m really excited (and become more so) about the prospect of multiday runs. (Note: I’m NOT talking about the crazy, round-and-round multiday runs.) I already went out and picked up some outdoorsy books at B&N after work yesterday and orders some materials on a certain long trail that I’d like to run. I hope to order a pack within a week so I can test it out plenty before T-day weekend.

One thing that’s really surprised me (and I’m not sure why) is that I’ve already found three different people who want to either run or fast hike a long trail section. At least two of those folks are already talking about multiple ventures. Sweet!

In other news, I’ve run seven days in a row. That’s nothing special, but a good sign after three weeks of barely running due to fall related injuries. As usual, I’m in the day 4-14 slump in any training reinitiation where I’m tired and not yet over it. Not a great coincidence that I’m entered in a 24 hour run this weekend. I’ll see what I’ll do. I don’t mean that in the sense of “I’ll test my limits.” I mean that in the sense that I’ll see what I want to do.

    Hey T Goat,
    This is Aaron again.
    24 hour run, sweet!

I am doing the San Francisco 24 hour run next week put on by pc trail runs.

I drought you will see this before for the run but you better at least get 72 miles in.

Since you can walk 3 mph you just need to surpass that to make it an actual running event.

I will be trying for 115 mile, (all flat), and hopefully that will get me a top 3 spot.
there are 4 people that are entered that I know can run further than I did last year (104 miles) so I will need to beat at least 2 of them to get top 3.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

A little more info on the running packs.
The Nathan 020 in great to about 6 pounds. The HPL 759 is excellent to about 10 pounds, (total weight) then diminishes from there.
Having a small pack that puts all the weight on your shoulders, (more than 15 pounds) for more than a few days sucks.
I honestly think the best thing would be a combo of the Nathan 020 pack w/out a bladder, (for the extra storage) and have a large capacity fuel belt on to hold the liquid. The 020 fells like nothing and if you can make it work, (I, at least) could do a 2-3 day 100+ mile or so hike with it.

Inov8 is now making some pretty sweet packs for Adventure Racing as well.
They are probably the best ones out there right now. They have the bladders horizontally at the bottom. I would only buy the size of the one that the bladder will fit right in the small of your back. Any where else and it probably won’t be all that comfortable.
The other problem is last time I checked they weren’t being sold in the U.S.

    Aaron,
Thanks again for all your comments. I’ll definitely be in touch. Things have been a bit crazy.

Best of luck at the SF24 this weekend!

I love the HPL 020. I use it for my “normal” long trail runs and in races where I can swap it out at frequent aid stations. Good idea with using it for storage without the bladder. I could also carry my water in hand held bottles rather than a waist system.
