Danger, Will Robinson

June 25, 2007 by Bryon Powell · 10 Comments

Ok, I’ve got to be mighty careful the next few days. After averaging 30 miles a week for the past four months (excluding Laurel Highlands), I ran 42 miles over the weekend. On Saturday I ran 17+ miles for my first long non-race training run in 16 weeks!? Sunday I had a nice follow up 25 miler. Oh boy. Not only did I add long runs back into my training regimen, I did back-to back long runs. On top of that, I ran workouts on both Wednesday and Friday last week so four of the past five days have been hard days. I can’t remember exactly what my weekly mileage was but I’m fairly certain that it was in the upper 70s for what was by far my biggest training week ( again excluding LHU) since sometime in February.

While I don’t feel sore or tired, I plan to run my flat five mile loop really easy tonight. I’d likely hit the track tomorrow, but fortunately I have a business dinner and will have to push the workout back to Wednesday.

Looks like I’m back on the training bandwagon.

Ps. While I don’t want to yet again falsely promise an upcoming post, I hope to post about the course of the upcoming North Face Endurance Challenge trail runs (10k, half marathon, 50k, 50 miler) to be held from Great Falls Nat’l Park on August 4. My runs this weekend took me over the entire course – it’s beautiful… and fast.

I’m almost there in terms of signing up. As silly as it is, I’m scared to do another 100. More than scared, I’m intimidated by the distance. Though I’ve already got 5 100s under my belt, 100 miles is still a really long way.

100 milers SUCK! you don’t want to do another one.. It is impossible to run the thing fast, they hurt REALLY bad, they take a LONG time to recover from, and all you get out of it is a belt buckle!

mmmm 3 weeks until my 27th attempt at the distance…then 4 short weeks after that and I get to try again, but at altitude! yippie!!!!

But seriously… if you run SD 100 you will not be optimally rested to go after a sub 6 hour at JFK…..think about it man.

You;’re right, Greg. I should give up. Retire. Ok, I officially hang up my Montrails and give up ultrarunning forever. Henceforth, I will refocus on what should be my best event – 800m.

Besides, I can’t be in sub-6 hour shape by November 2007. November 2008 would be another store, but hopefully I’ll be running 1:54 800s by then.

Perfect. Focus on JFK or the 800 and pace me at SD. Sounds like a plan. I hated my first 100. Makes me wonder why I’m so anxious to sign up for a second? Must be for the buckle.

    Amy,
With my coming exclusive focus on anaerobic training, I’d be good for around 1200m, 1600m max … and that’s if it’s downhill. ;-)

Also, be sure you know why you are signing up for another 100. I know I can’t think of a good reason to do so. Thigh, give me another good month’s training and I might have one.

    Dane,
I’m planning on running one of the TNF EV races in couple weeks. Had planned on the 50 mil;er but my lack of training and the possible appearance of my sis in DC that weekend have me thinking 50k or even half marathon. For trail races, the 50k and 50 mile coures are fast.

Thanks for the heads-up on the course. I am pretty sure I will be doing the 50 miler.
